Shirley Katz
Shirley Katz was born in New York City and was brought up in Brooklyn. She went to Hunter College and received a BS in Economics & Accounting. During her last year at Hunter, she married Donald Katz. After college, she studied for and received her Casualty and Life insurance licenses. They moved to Freeport where they raised their four children and established a successful insurance agency. During this period, Shirley became involved in Girl Scouts, serving as a scout leader and Neighborhood Chairman. In addition, She served as president of various PTA's.
Shirley fell in love with Montauk back in the 1950’s when the Katz family started camping at Hither Hills State Park; first in a tent, and then later in a trailer. It was their annual vacation spot. They became second homeowners in 1980 and, after retirement, they moved to Montauk full time in 1992. Unfortunately, Donald died in 1998. Shirley chose to remain in Montauk and continues to enjoy its beauty and special qualities.
Shirley became a board member of CCOM about 10 years ago and shortly thereafter became its treasurer. She is a member of the Democratic Committee in East Hampton, works and volunteers at the Retreat, and takes art classes.
